I’ve never seen a piston compressed with channel locks before. Is that something you should be doing?

I always do. Usually u cant get the caliper to go over the new pads cause they are thicker

It is fine as long as you have the bleeder open and you don’t pinch the rubber boot/gasket on the piston.

sure, why not? Channel locks, c-clamp, special caliper compression tool. They all get the job done.

I nearly always use a C-clamp, myself.

I’ve diddly-done it before.

I don’t see a problem with it. Should be fine. I usually use C-Clamps if I can’t find anything else.

I just compress the Pistons with the old brake pads and a C-clamp. As long as you don't rush it, everything will be fine.

Yeah, I just typically use a c-clamp on the old pad to evenly distribute the force.

I was just thinking channel locks wouldn’t be evenly distributed like a c-clamp on the old pads.

I think as long as you make some attempt to get the jaw across both sides of the piston it shouldn’t hurt it. Calipers are pretty tough.

Hahaha, I should have taken a picture of the piston I just shattered with a screwdriver on my WJ last week before I took it in for the core charge. I’ve replaced more calipers than I care to.

Ah. I usually grab whatever is closest to me

Me too. I have a great big beast with a nice flat surface.

I just use my hands, but then again, my coat is that guy’s skin inside his bear coat.

wow, thats pretty bad luck. What were you doing to shatter a piston with a screwdriver? The only calipers I have had to replace were just seized up and I was too lazy to rebuild.

This is how the manual said to do it and how the guy at the parts store said to do it when I asked him where the c clamps were.

interesting. I have never seen it done like that.

Yeah, neither had I. After my experience I don’t think I will again. Every time I try a new method I keep coming back to the fact that I only really trust doing it with a c clamp.
